Open Workshops – Week 2

With the Labour Party conference in town it seemed like a good idea to think about the politics of austerity last week.

We finally have a clear opposition (alongside our own brilliant Caroline Lucas) to austerity with Jeremy Corbyn’s election as leader of the Labour party.

So we decided to explore both sides of the ideological divide. Half the group read articles from the Mirror and the Guardian and the other half read articles from the Mail and the Telegraph.

We tried verbatim writing and each group wrote the beginnings of a song expressing the different points of view.

Luckily for us we have a talented musician in the group, so he composed a beautiful melody on his guitar. By the end of the week, we had two great songs about austerity.

This week we are thinking about what kinds of characters might have different beliefs about austerity at the Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project on Tuesday from 10-1. On Thursday at the Dome from 10-1 we have dancer Gary Clarke coming to run a movement workshop.

These are open workshops and everyone is welcome, particularly those people who have felt the impact of austerity on their lives.
