Drop-in weekly workshops in Whitehawk: Born and Bread

Join us for one (or all!) of our weekly drop-in-workshops as we explore our new play Born and Bread.

If Brighton were a dinner table that stretches out along the sea, who sits at the table? What stories are told around it? And what’s on the menu?

Over the next four weeks, we’re exploring scenes from our new play and we would love to see you at one of our workshops to help develop it.

Whether you used to do a bit of acting and have been thinking of doing something like it again, or have never done anything like this before and are a bit curious and fancy a bit of laugh, then these workshops are for you.

Born and Bread will see characters from across Brighton come to life; sitting at the table, sharing a meal, and telling their stories of home, belonging, and identity across the city.

The piece has been written by Jack Parris and Tanushka Marah, who are also directing the show. The script has been developed from the wonderful stories we have listened to from local people over the last two months. From lunch clubs to late-night hot dogs, cuisines from across the world, to fish and chips on the beach, food surplus to food poverty, real junk food to meals on wheels.

Jack and Tanushka will be leading the workshops. We’ll be reading the script, building our group, learning how to perform, and playing lots of games.

Follow on sessions

We’ll be performing Born and Bread on 18 and 19 July at ACCA. Anyone that wants to perform will be invited to a casting evening on 24 May. Everyone that wants to get involved and can commit to all the rehearsals will be given a part. We will hold weekly rehearsals for the performance throughout June and July. If you don’t want to perform, but still want to drop into our workshops, that’s fine too.

Who our workshops are for

We prioritise people who have had the fewest opportunities to access arts and cultural activities. Our activities are open to people over the age of 18, with a BNpostcode, and who have never worked professionally in the arts.
